Big Map

This is a route in the Pre-Pyrenees, along landscapes of amazing natural beauty. It gets inside 2 areas of the Natural Interest Areas Plan (PEIN), which belong to the Nature Network 2000:
  • High Valley of Serradell – Mountain range of Sant Gervàs

  • La Faiada de Malpàs and Combatiri.
These areas of natural interest belong to the interior mountain ranges of the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees.

The main vegetation landscape is made of montane grasslands, box thickets, pinewoods and dry oak woods. In the past cereal fields would cover plain and hollows, but nowadays they concentrate only where slope is less steep. As a consequence, mountains’ bottom parts are occupied again by young oaks.

In the highest parts of the itinerary there are mixed beech forests with beech trees, aspens and rowans. This kind of humid forest, in the middle of the Mediterranean region, is interesting and particularly wonderful in autumn when their leaves become tremendously colourful.

Among fauna, birds surely are the best represented group. The most emblematic species are scavengers such as the Bearded Vulture (also known as Lammergeier), the Eurasian griffon and the Egyptian Vulture. We highlight as well other birds of pray such as the Golden Eagle, the Eagle Owl and the Peregrine Falcon (also known as the Peregrine or Duck Hawk in North America).
